History

Glenelg was originally settled by the aboriginal Kaurna people and in July 1836 Col William Light and George Strickland Kingston discovered Glenelg in their survey of the coastline to find a large land mass suitable for colonist settlement. On December 28th 1836 Captain Hindmarsh; the first governor from the UK, colonial secretary Robert Gouger and 200 colonists aboard HMS Buffalo proclaimed South Australia where the Old Gum Tree stands today and where the proclamation is read each year. Glenelg was named after Lord Glenelg the Secretary of State for the Colonists and a replica of HMS Buffalo can be found berthed alongside Wiggly Reserve where you can enjoy a meal on board and see some of the original equipment used back in the day aboard this vessel.
